Review: Cutting for Stone

I just finished a fantastic, fantastic book: Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese.

Equal parts medicine, history, and gripping story, the novel is both beautiful and compelling. Although I always love a well done store, what really makes a book great for me is when I feel like I've learned something as well. Cutting for Stone does both-- it draws you with complex characters and an un-put-down-able plot, but it teaches you as well: about the modern history of Ethiopia, what it's like to practice medicine in Ethiopia, how that compares to practicing medicine in inner-city America.

For anyone interested in medicine, Ethiopia, or simply a heart-felt and beautiful story, I can't recommend Cutting for Stone highly enough.

5/5.
