The day after my parents arrived in Lausanne, it began snowing again. Not just a few flurries, either-- heaps and heaps of thick, white flakes. Although it was tempting to stay inside, drinking hot chocolate by the
Christmas tree, we decided to embrace the cold, windy weather and explore Switzerland anyway.
Last Friday, we decided to visit Montreux, a city just east of Lausanne. Montreux has been nicknamed the jewel of the "Swiss Riveria", the stretch of land between Lac Leman and the Alps featuring a Mediterranean microclimate. Despite the cold and snowy weather, there were still palmetto trees and flowers, and our walk alongside the lake was absolutely beautiful.

"hey dad! turn around and smile!" |
 |
although the vineyards were covered in golden leaves just
a few weeks ago, they were now bare and scraggly. |
 |
even in the snow, the plants seemed to be thriving! I loved
this plant's brilliant magenta color. |
We walked along the lake, chatting and admiring the views until we reached
Chateau de Chillon. Although archeologists are still debating just how old the oldest portions of the castle are, the first written record of the castle was from
1005! From then on, the castle passed from the Counts of Savoy, to the Bernese, to the Vaudois, developing a rich and colorful history.
Today, the castle is one of Switzerland's most visited historic monuments, and for good reason. Although much of the castle's interiors feature well-done restorations and recreations, much is original. Despite having changed hands multiple times, the castle was never actually attacked or taken in siege. Because of this, many medieval murals, ancient tapestries, and centuries-old wooden ceilings are not only still intact, but are in remarkably good condition.

although the castle would be beautiful in any weather,
the blanket of snow made it magnificent! |

the castle is located directly on the lake,
providing an excellent view of lac
