Although Christmas Markets originated in Germany during the Late Middle Ages, today they can be found throughout Europe. Christmas Markets generally open during the first week of Advent, and remain open throughout the Christmas season, providing entertainment, food, and a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. While large Christmas Markets can feature hundreds and hundreds of stalls, mid-sized ones, like Montreux's, have closer to fifty. Christmas Market stalls generally feature traditional foods-- like fondue, Christmas sweets, and roasted chestnuts-- as well as hand-made crafts, toys, and decorations. One of the most traditional Christmas Markets treats is GlΓΌhwein, a hot mulled wine.
two of the stalls at montreux's christmas market- aren't they charming? |
in addition to stalls, the christmas market also had tents, where people could drink wine, eat fondue and warm up by the fire. |
one of my favorite christmas market stalls! my sweet tooth (er...sweet teeth...) was definitely happy to see this. |
a trip to montreux isn't complete without walking by the infamous freddie mercury statue. queen recorded a large portion of their music in montreux. |
dad and mom, snapping photos and drinking gluhwein! |
me + dad. |
me + mom.....I just realized we don't have a montreux photo of the three of us! |
looking up the steps into a different section of the christmas market. |
although the giant ferris wheel was beautiful by night, we all agreed it was far too cold and windy for a ride! |
