Apple Crumble Cake

This past friday was my lab's annual Holiday party! The party itself was a blast- it's always fun to dress up and mingle in a setting that's not a sterile cell culture bench.

In addition to chatting with my lab friends, one of my favorite aspects of the party was the variety of food. Since the LLCB is incredibly, incredibly diverse, we were all asked to bring and appetizer or dessert representing our corner of the globe. It was so much fun to sample everyone's favorite international treats!

What did I bring? My first thought was to attempt to make cheese straws (which I absolutely adore), but despite having a large section of every grocery store devoted to cheese, I could not find any cheddar in Lausanne. Although I love gruyere, gruyere cheese straws seemed a little strange, so I decided to pursue to dessert route.

My next thought was a classic apple pie, but then I remembered the fabulous apple crumble cake my friend Amy made for our Thanksgiving dinner party. While apple crumble cake isn't exactly something I grew up with, it did seem fairly traditional and the recipe was easy to boot. Besides, it's always fun to try something new!

heaps and heaps of apples!
layer number one.
dough mixture, loads of chopped apples,
cinnamon-sugar crumbles. ready
to pop in the oven!
baked and delicious. my apartment still smelled wonderful
hours later.

a little burnt on top, but still yummy. I'm still not
sure how my spastic oven managed to burn
only half of the top....

Despite being a bit overly-crisp on the top, the apple crumble cake was still fantastic and left the party fairly devoured.
