Cumin is not Curry

Oh, wow. I really botched this one up.

I’ve never really been a mashed potatoes person. They’re too buttery, too mushy, and just never seem quite as satisfying and wholesome as other potato cooking styles. Still, a few days ago, Ben and I bought a ginormous bag of potatoes, and, after exhausting our better potato cooking options (baked potatoes, roasted potatoes, chip-like fried potatoes…) I thought I ‘d give mashed potatoes another shot.

Despite not being a mashed potatoes fan, I was pretty excited about this recipe I found. The recipe is actually called “warm potato casserole” and between the non-mushy looking texture and unique ingredients, I thought it might be far enough removed from traditional mashed potatoes to be pretty tasty. And, I’m sure it would have been- had I not used yellow potatoes and red onions instead of red potatoes and yellow onions and forgot that cumin and curry are not the same spice. Whoops.

On the plus side, they still tasted okay (Ben got thirds) and my accompanying roasted veggies were, if I do say so myself, fantastic.  Ben even said, “I wish we had more vegetables,” and considering he is a complete carnivore, that’s pretty impressive.

a few of our nine million potatoes.
roasted veggies marinated in olive oil, balsamic, and (of
course) heaps of garlic. YUM.
roasted veggies and completely-incorrect mashed potatoes.
(sidenote: I actually eat a lot more than this. I just forgot to
take a photo until after I had already started eating...)

On a non-food related note, Ben and I are biking from Lausanne to Vevey tomorrow with the Xchange student union! After a long week spent in microscope caves, I’m more than ready to enjoy fresh air and spectacular scenery.
