Like many people about to embark on a big adventure, I decided to start a blog.
Last April, I decided to accept a Whitaker Fellowship. The Whitaker Fellowship allows recent college-grads to spend one year overseas to work on a self-directed project to benefit biomedical engineering. My fellowship is going to be at the Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne, a university in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Since phones are pricey, Skype dates take planning, and in-person get-togethers are completely out of the question, I thought a blog would be a convenient way to let friends and family know what all I’m up to. I also have a sneaking suspicion that blogging daily (or almost daily) about my new life will help me to both remember my adventures in the future, and to live with greater intention in the meantime. After all, if I’m going to start writing about my life, it better be interesting.
I’m due to leave for Switzerland on September 6, and originally thought I wouldn’t start my blog until then. However, ever since the idea of a blog took hold, I’ve found myself thinking up all sorts of things to write about, some related to Switzerland, some not. Without really meaning to, I've started cataloging all sorts of blog post ideas-- in my head, in a notebook on my desk, on a tab in my phone. What if I wrote about baking banana bread, or running a marathon, or interesting discoveries in science? What if, instead of waiting for my Switzerland adventure to start, I started writing about my life now?
Why not jump the gun?
